Watermelon – Sugar Baby

A sweet tasting smaller variety. This early and productive fruit has sweet, juicy, medium red flesh with a thin hard rind. Weighing anywhere from 3.5-5.5kg the fruit grow to around 20cm across. A good choice if space is an issue as can be trained up a trellis, is faster to ripen in a short summer and is drought resistant. Can be grown outside if given a warm, sunny and sheltered position. • Sow April-May 1cm deep in 7cm pots. Place in a propagator or somewhere you can maintain temperature at 20-25°C
• Days to germination: 5-7
• Days to maturity 70-90
• Once plants have their first set of true leaves pot on to a 13cm pot for a few weeks
• Water regularly and feed with a liquid fertiliser every two weeks
• Pinch out the tip at the 4 leaf stage and train side shoots
• The fruit is ripe when it sounds hollow if you tap it with your knuckles
