This hardy winter vegetable is easy to grow and produces a heavy crop of tasty purple heads and young leaves from late winter to early spring, as far as April. The heads will turn green when cooked. Cut the main head early and the plant will continue to produce numerous smaller heads through to late spring. Harvest continuously to keep them cropping. Download sowing guide

• Days to germination: 7-10
• Sow directly into the garden or in trays
• Cover seeds with 3mm of fine soil and keep moderately moist
• Sow early spring or mid-summer for a winter harvest in a sunny location
• Space plants 45-60cm in rows 1 metre apart
• Thin or transplant seedlings when 5cm tall
